What you drive

Coverage written for the bike and the parts you paid for

A bike is rated on its own, and the money that makes it yours sits outside the factory value a quote starts from. We go through what the bike is worth with that work on it, what you carry for your own injuries when a driver pulls out in front of you, and what Florida does and does not ask of a rider, before we talk price.

  • Accessories and custom parts are covered to a stated limit, not an assumed one. Exhaust, bags, seat, chrome and paint come to a figure the policy has to name, and that figure has to match what you have spent.
  • Florida's no-fault PIP does not reach motorcycles, so the medical coverage that follows a car driver does not follow a rider. Medical payments and uninsured motorist coverage are the two lines that pay in its place.
  • Guest passenger liability is not on every motorcycle policy by default. If you carry a passenger, it is a cover to confirm and not to assume.

What Florida motorcycle insurance covers

We shop the market for you across 30+ carriers

Florida motorcycle insurance is written on its own policy rather than added to the car, because the exposure is not the same and neither is the way it is rated. The parts look familiar enough, liability and damage to the bike and the uninsured driver, but what counts as the bike includes work most riders have paid for themselves.

What a rider is required to carry and what leaves a rider covered are two different questions, and the second is the one worth the conversation. Riders are insured from the Sunrise office across Broward County and the rest of Florida, on the bike's own policy rather than as a line on the car's.

  • Liability

Injury and property damage you are responsible for while riding.

  • Physical damage

The bike itself, in a collision and in the events that have nothing to do with one.

  • Accessories and custom parts

Exhaust, bags, chrome, paint. The work that is on the bike but not in its factory value.

  • Uninsured motorist

Your own injuries when the driver at fault is uninsured or carries too little.

Questions

Motorcycle Insurance FAQ

Does Florida require motorcycle insurance?

Not the way it requires it for a car. The state does not make a rider carry liability insurance to register a bike, and riders 21 and over who ride without a helmet must carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits. What does not change is that a rider who causes a crash owes for the injuries and the damage whether or not there is a policy behind it, and that is the bill the liability side of a motorcycle policy pays.

Are my accessories and custom parts covered?

Up to the limit the policy states for them, and that limit is set when the policy is written rather than worked out after a loss. A quote starts from factory value, so the work you have added to the bike has to be listed and added up. Bring the receipts, or a total you can stand behind, and that figure is what gets written in.

Can I add the bike to my auto policy instead?

The bike is written on a policy of its own. Rating a motorcycle has little in common with rating a car, and the coverages a rider needs are not the ones a car policy carries. Both policies can sit with the same agent, and we read the two side by side, which is where the gaps show up.
