Above it all
Umbrella insurance starts where your other limits stop
Your auto and home policies each carry a liability limit, and it is easy to go years without looking at the number. An umbrella policy sits above those limits and keeps paying once they are used up, so one serious accident does not come down to the figure you picked years ago.
- Pays for injury and property damage you are liable for, on the same kinds of claim the policy underneath covers, once that limit is exhausted.
- Covers the cost of defending a covered claim, which is often what uses up the limit underneath in the first place.
- Pays nothing toward your own car or your own house, and only gets written when the policies underneath it carry set limits.

What a Florida umbrella policy covers
We shop the market for you across 30+ carriers
A Florida umbrella policy does one job. It sits above the liability you already carry on your home and your cars and keeps paying after those limits are used up. It covers nothing on its own and replaces nothing you have: it extends the part of your existing policies that answers for harm to other people.
The reason to look at one is that liability is the part of a policy with no ceiling in real life. A serious accident is not capped by the number you picked when you bought the car insurance. An umbrella is quoted from the Sunrise office across Florida, alongside the policies it sits over, because the limits underneath it are what decide whether it can be written at all.
Excess liability
Liability cover above what your auto and home policies carry, once those limits are reached.
Legal defense costs
The cost of defending a covered claim, which is often what exhausts a limit in the first place.
Personal injury claims
Claims like libel, slander and false arrest, which an umbrella takes in alongside injury and damage.
Umbrella Insurance FAQ
What does sitting above my existing limits mean?
Your auto policy pays liability claims up to the limit written on it and then stops. If a claim settles for more than that, the difference is yours to find. An umbrella policy takes over at that point and keeps paying up to its own limit, for the same kinds of claims the policy underneath it answers for.
Do I have to carry certain limits before I can get one?
Yes. An umbrella is written on top of the liability you already have, so the policies beneath it have to carry minimum limits before it can be issued at all. If yours sit below what is required, we tell you where they need to be and quote both at the same time.
Does an umbrella cover my own car or my own house?
No. It is liability coverage and nothing else. Repairs to your own property stay with your auto and home policies; the umbrella answers for what you owe other people, including the cost of defending that claim.
